Brief synopsis of the story
In 1931 three half caste girls (half aboriginal and half european) were abducted from their home Jigalong and from their mothers. They were taken on a boat and also had to travel with two sick women to get them to hospital. Then they arrived at Morre River half caste settlement home, North of Perth. They were sent there to try and get rid of the blackness out of them. All three girls escaped a few days after and began their journey to return home to Jigalong. Their trip was 1600 kilometers and took nine weeks. On the way they struggled through a flooded river, sand dunes, heathlands, wheatbelt, mallee country, gibber plains, red dust and mulga country, spinifex country, claypan and salt lake. They also had to learn how to ration any food and water they could get and to trust strangers to help them through their journey back home. The girls also had to be smart and avoid the trackers who were trying to find them. On their way home a man the girls thought they trusted tricked Gracie and she got re abducted and taken back it the Morre River settlement home. So it was only Molly and Daisy from then on to walk back home, which they got to eventually. This is a true story written by Molly's daughter Doris Pikington.
Which scenes were the most memorable for you? Why?
When the three girls got taken away from their families and put into Morre River settlement home, which is a home for half caste aborigines to learn about white peoples ways and to get rid of the 'blackness' out of them. This was memorable for me because it was so sad and if that happened to me I would have nothing worth living for.
How did the author keep your interest? Think about the pace of the story, the events that are told, or just talked about, the language used, etc.
After about the first hundred pages I lost interest and I found it rather boring But when the story came up about the three half caste girls I got a lot more interested than I was in the beginning. At first I felt like the story was really slow and found myself reading the same lines over and over.
